What is reverse osmosis ?

OSMOSIS : It is the term used to describe the natural miration of weaker saline solution/ pure water on one side of semi permeable membrane to strong saline sloution on other side of membrane. It is used by the plants to absorb the water from soil..
Rev. Osmosis and osmosis.

  1. SEMI PERMEABLE MEMBRANE : it is the membrane /screen having nunerous holes that allows water molecule to pass anddoesnt allow the salt particles / molecules to pass through it, whose dimensions are larger than hole size. The solution that left with higher concentration of salt is called brine.
  2.  REVERSE OSMOSIS: it is the process to  reverse the osmosis, so a high pressure is applied to the saline solution to force the solution through semipermeable membrane to produce the pure water having purity of 95%-99% . Required pressure to reverse the osmosis is directly proportional to the dissolve salts in water and it is greater than osmotic pressure.
  3. Advantages of reverse osmosis :
* Produces pure water of 95-99%purity.
* removes most of the dissolved salts.
* it is fitted on ships which remain stooped at sea .

On board ship reverse osmosis is used in FWG to produce water it consist of
1. cyclone separatpor.
2. Sterlizer.
3. Filters ( primary and secondary filters).
4. High pressure pump.
5. Semi permeable membrane chambers.
6. Back wash valve to remove the brine.  .
